The Coral Watch program primarily focuses on the health of corals in Belize with a specific focus on coral bleaching and disease. Photographs of rare corals, healthy vs diseased corals, scientists studying corals or macro photos would be good images to enter.

The Turtle Watch Program covers anything related to sea turtles in Belize and people working to conserve them.  Images of sea turtles observed in the water, hatchlings on the beach, or nests or tracks of sea turtles as well as sea turtle strandings and releases can be entered.

The Lionfish program focuses on reducing the number of this invasive species on the Belize Barrier Reef. Images of lionfish, divers managing lionfish, or cooking and eating lionfish would excellent examples to enter under this category.

Reef Rally focuses on unique marine life sightings in Belize. Photography of any marine life that is rare, different, or unique in Belize would be appropriate! Examples include toad fish, rarely sighted fish!

WHAT TO ENTER
Your photographs taken in Belize can help ECOMAR continue to raise awareness on the importance of protecting Belize’s amazing diversity of marine life; thank you for helping to further our mission through your photography!

We are looking for striking images that represent our focus areas which include:
  • Coral Watch
  • Turtle Watch
  • Lionfish
  • Reef Rally
  • Whale Watch, and
  • Climate Change

The founding premise behind the Coral and Turtle Watch programs is to identify the impacts of climate change, and these changes will likely increase hence the need to continue to raise awareness of this so that we can adapt to these changes.  For more information about any one of these programs, please visit the Program page, and for summaries see details to the right.

If you choose to include people in your submission, you are responsible for obtaining necessary releases from the individuals depicted and must be able to provide copies of those releases to ECOMAR upon request. A sample release form may be downloaded here.

All photographs should accurately reflect subject matter and the scene as it appeared.  Photos altered beyond standard optimization (cropping, color and contrast, exposure, sharpening, spotting, etc.) will be disqualified.
