Hope for Ms Caye Bokel is on the move! We've been closely monitoring her location each day, wondering if she was able to fully recover from being speared illegally. Yesterday, on World Sea Turtle Day, her location was at The Elbow, near the area where she was initially hunted, suggesting she has perhaps recovered. After recouping 46 days on the bountiful reefs of western Turneffe Atoll, she is making her way to possible nesting grounds! Her last points show her moving from The Elbow, across the Caribbean Sea, over the Belize Barrier Reef, and into the Victoria Channel. The mainland coast of Belize supports nesting loggerheads and hawksbills. If you're traveling in the Victoria Channel be sure to report any turtle observations! If you live along the coast, keep a lookout for Ms Caye Bokel and other turtles that are starting to come ashore during turtle nesting season!
Hope for Ms Caye Bokel!

Currently there is 1 sea turtle tagged in Belize that is sending signals.
Hope 4 Ms Caye Bokel is a loggerhead turtle that was intentionally speared by a fisherman, that got away. Another fisher saw the turtle struggling on the surface. Read on to learn more about the journey of Ms Caye Bokel! Tracking sea turtles would make a great school project, and seaturtle.org has a webpage specifically for teachers so they can introduce sea turtle migration into the classroom. Special thanks to SEATURTLE.ORG for making it possible to easily track sea turtles and Dr Todd Rimkus, Marymount University and Hawkbill Hope for supplying satellite tags! |
