ST GEORGE'S CAYE FIELD STATION
The Western Caribbean Sea washes up on the coast in Belize. The climate is tropical with prevailing winds from the southeast during the summer months and northeast during the winter months. The St George's Caye Field Station is located on Historic St George's Caye, Belize's first capital from the 1700s. In 1798 the Battle of St George's Caye took place at this site and has become known as the single maritime confrontation, probably as an extraordinary fact in naval history, that resulted in the early English settlers defeating the Spanish armada. Little has changed on the island in 200 years since all residents must generate their own electricity and catch rain water. The comfortable Creole Colonial architecture takes visitors back in time to a less complicated time. The facility provides clean, comfortable rooms, and delicious homecooked meals served three times daily.
