The start is delayed but worth the wait!

Turtle Watch Community Groups

In 2025 ECOMAR and the Belize Fisheries Department, with support from the Specially Protected Areas and Wildlife, conducted a training program in southern Belize to establish Turtle Watch Community Monitoring Groups.  The following communities and cayes have Licensed Sea Turtle Responders:

• Hopkins
• Sittee Point
• Riversdale
• Placencia North
• Placencia Central
• Placencia South
• Tobacco Caye
• Southwater Caye
• Carrie Bow Caye
• Pompion Caye

New outreach materials were also produced under this grant and include 100 printed copies of the Field Guide to Sea Turtle Nesting: Handbook for Trained Researchers, and a poster to raise awareness of sea turtle regulations.

The Belize Turtle Watch Program has developed 5 posters; two were developed for the Belize Sea Turtle Expo in 2009 and include:

Two New Lyrics from Grand Master

Grand Master is a well known artist in Belize who writes, sings songs, and prepares poems on specific topics. ECOMAR worked with Leroy Young, aka Grand Master, on these two new poems to bring attention to sea turtle conservation in celebration of the 10th anniversary (2012) affording protection to all sea turtles in Belize.
