MEMBERSHIP - ADOPT A TURTLE

If turtles are your passion then you can help support our in-water work at Gallow's Point and Robinson Point where fishermen work along scientists to gather important information on sea turtle populations resident in these two distinct marine ecosystems.

Gallow's Point

Gallow's Point is a 5 mile stretch along the Belize Barrier Reef 10 miles east of Belize City.  The reef supports juvenile hawksbills and adult hawksbills, loggerhead sea turtles and the occasional green.

ECOMAR has been conducting in-water snorkel surveys to assess sea turtle abundance and diversity at Gallow's Point since 2009.  Our studies have shown that the fore reef is important developmental habitat for juvenile hawksbill sea turtles.

Robinson Point

Robinson Point

Robinson Point is an area about 12 miles southeast of Belize City that lies inside the Belize Barrier Reef and has two deep water channels bringing in fresh oceanic sea water.  There is a large area  over the "12 Foot Bank" a shallow sea bed covered in dense sea grass which attract adult green sea turtles and the channel edges and gullies support patch reefs which attract hawksbill sea turtles.

In 2007 we began conducting Point Scan surveys to identify which areas may have more turtle activity and also conducted benthic surveys to identify species composition. In 2008 ex-turtle fishermen assisted in our surveys at Robinson Point using the traditional net capture method they used to employ before 2002 when all sea turtles received protection under the Belize Fishery Regulations.

A highlight of this program is that these same fishermen that used to make a living capturing and killing sea turtles, are making a living off protecting and studying them.
